PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Designed to provide a striking structure, this footbridge formed a strategic link for thousands of spectators for the London 2012 Olympics and now forms a gateway to the Borough of Hackney, linking Hackney Marshes playing fields with the new legacy facilities at Eton Manor sports complex. The bridge has an exceptionally slender arch with a dense distribution of steel plate hangers, resulting in a structure with unique hybrid behaviour between a tied arch and Vierendeel truss, and demanding sophisticated analysis in its design.
Judge's comment:
The judges are impressed by the complex buckling analysis undertaken to realise this structure, requiring the designer to work beyond the provisions of the Standards to which is was designed.
