PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Appearing like the skeleton of a space station fallen onto an Adelaide beachside, Skymate is an aerial adventure park, consisting of 54 ‘sky pod’ activity stations over four levels, which form the framework for over one hundred different aerial activities.
Skymate is 26 metres high. Of the 16 steel columns that support the activity stations, only six actually meet the ground. The rest are fully suspended, tied together with platform rings and structural cables.
Judge's comment: Skymate is an exuberant structure made with a “kit of parts” approach. The sturdy, practical steel components are connected by a tensegrity structure that gives the overall impression of a space station that has docked on earth. The structure is replete with clever reusable details like the steel screw pile foundations.
